Why I love Germans

German Shepards that is. I guess Germans also, I AM 50% German but I don't know any of 'em from the old mother land. And the experience with my German father doesn't really predispose me to go seeking them out. He's a whole different post, trust me.

Anyway, back to my story. When I was little, we had a dog named Bud.

This dog looks remarkably like him. A wonderful German Shepard that was a little lighter in color than usual in the face and chest. I apparently napped on him, rode him as a horse and even would experiment with him. Like the time I wanted to see just how far my hand would go down his mouth...my mom caught me that time and she said Bud had this "Please make her stop" expression on his face.

He was very smart and very loving with us girls and Mom would send us out to play in the yard and tell Bud to keep an eye on us. I believe that dog understood every word she was saying.

Do you remember those old gas meters that would stick out above the ground? I used to think they looked a lot like a horse and loved to ride them. I was an imaginative kid...you wouldn't have guessed that about me would ya?

This particular metal horse was on the other side of the chain link fence that surrounded our yard. I was busily clambering over the fence to get to my darling race horse when I was grabbed from behind!

Yes, he had me by my panties and was holding on tight! I hollered at him to stop and let go, but to no avail. Bud paid absolutely no attention to my wails. Mom on the other hand, DID hear my yelling and was not very pleased to see that I had been attempting to scale the fence. Since I was caught in the act, I didn't have much leeway to wiggle out of it.

I bet Bud got some gravy mixed into his food that night.

My ex and I had a dog that was 95 percent Sheperd. His name was Bo and to this day people who remember him say he was THE most special dog that they ever met. I miss him to this day and it's been 9 years since he has been gone.

Nothin' I love more or better than a good dog story. And they're all good dogs!

Whenever the day comes that we don't have 3 indoor dogs running under our feet... I want German Shepherds. Two of them. I should've gotten them last year when I had the chance -but if I get them now I'll be called the crazy dog lady.

And yeah, Bud was a good dog. The best.

When loose the little dogs we have a Shepherd will be great.

FYI-I have to read your blog and leave comments here now. Your sister has become a total Facebook whore and doesn't blog anymore.

I have a beautiful picture of Bud. I'll scan and e-mail it to you.

That dog would give me these looks if I swatted one of you kids. It was like "Don't you hit my babies"
He was also a great watch dog. He went through a garage door window after some guy messing around your Grannys house.
This dog was really a family dog. Who ever needed him the most would have him for a while. He really belonged to your Uncle Sonny.

You remember our boys from the sistahs no.1 trip, I hope. They are great dogs and loyal to a fault. Chief and Jake miss you. Love, Big K

Yes, as big K says above, we do love our Shepherds, Chief and Jake. My fondest memories are of the original Jake; a Belgian Shepherd (just a bigger version of a German). He weighed in at over 120 pounds and we got him when Z was a baby. They were inseparable. One morning, I was getting ready to leave for work and take Z to daycare. I kept calling for him, but couldn't find him. Then I spyed him behind the couch with both his hands in big Jake's mouth. I said, "uh, what are you doing?" He said "I am playing with his teeth!". I swear the dog rolled his eyes at me and kind of shrugged his shoulders like "well, what are ya gonna do?"
